A computer opponent is useful when you want a game without waiting for another player. You can try an opening, pause over a difficult position, or repeat a move you did not understand. If you want to play chess online, the most useful starting point is deciding what kind of game you need: a relaxed match against the computer, a tougher challenge, or a shared board with a friend.
This guide explains those choices and how they work in Chessroom. It also separates a two-player game on one device from online multiplayer, because those are different ways to play.
How to play chess against the computer
To play chess online free in Chessroom, open the game and choose vs Computer. On a phone, tap Play Now first to reveal the setup menu. Choose your pieces, select a difficulty and start the game. White always makes the first move, so choosing black means the computer begins.
- Choose white or black. Try both over several games. Playing the other colour helps you see the same opening from a different side.
- Select Easy, Medium or Hard. Start with a level where you can follow what is happening.
- Select a piece. Highlighted squares show legal destinations. Tap or click one to make your move.
- Check the reply. Before moving again, ask which squares or pieces the computer now attacks.
You do not need a game account to begin. The computer opponent runs in your browser, and the current game can be saved there when browser storage is available. Use the same browser and device to resume; clearing site data can remove the saved position.

Choose a challenge you can learn from
A stronger opponent is not automatically a better practice partner. If every game ends before you understand the position, lower the difficulty and concentrate on keeping your pieces safe. When those games become comfortable, move up.
| Difficulty | Useful for | A focus for your game |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | Learning legal moves and basic threats | Keep pieces defended and notice checks. |
| Medium | Practising opening habits and simple plans | Develop pieces and look for undefended targets. |
| Hard | A tougher casual computer game | Consider the opponent’s reply before committing. |
When you want to play chess against computer hard level
Select Hard in the setup menu. Before each move, look for checks, captures and threats for both sides. A move that appears to win material may fail if it leaves your king exposed or allows a stronger reply.
Searching for “play chess against computer hard level online free” can lead to engines of very different strengths. Difficulty labels are not a common rating scale. Chessroom’s Hard setting is its strongest available option, but it is not presented as a particular Elo rating or a professional analysis engine.
What about “play chess against computer level 10”?
Numbered levels belong to individual chess services. A level 10 opponent on one site does not necessarily match level 10 elsewhere. Chessroom uses three named settings rather than ten numbered levels, so there is no separate Level 10 mode to unlock.
Play chess 2 player on one device
Choose 2 Players when you want a game with someone beside you. Both players use the same board on one phone, tablet or computer. Decide who plays white, make a move and let the other player take their turn.
The Flip board control changes the board’s perspective. In mobile two-player mode, the piece drawings also face the player whose turn it is, while their squares stay the same. The board itself changes orientation only when you use Flip board.
If you want to play chess online with friends free, check whether you mean sharing one screen or playing from separate homes. Chessroom’s current 2 Players mode is the shared-device option. It does not create an invitation link, connect two devices or match you with a remote opponent.
Use the computer for a game on your own. Use 2 Players for a friend on the same device. Switching between these modes starts a new game. Finish the current game before switching if you want to continue playing it.
How to make a chess game useful practice
You do not need to memorise many openings to play a better chess game. A short routine before every move is often more helpful: check your king, identify the opponent’s threat, then examine what your proposed move leaves undefended.
Start with the centre and your minor pieces
In the opening, try to influence the centre and bring knights and bishops into play. Avoid moving the same piece repeatedly without a reason. Develop with a purpose rather than trying to follow a memorised sequence after the position has changed.
Use hints after forming your own idea
Before tapping Hint, choose a move yourself and explain why you like it. Compare that idea with the suggestion. A hint is a possible move, not a complete explanation or a guarantee of the strongest continuation.
Use undo to explore a specific mistake
When you overlook a capture or a check, Undo lets you revisit the decision. Try to identify the warning you missed before choosing another move. In a friendly two-player game, agree with the other player before taking a move back.
Read the move history
Squares use a letter and number, such as e4. In Chessroom’s move list, N means knight, B bishop, R rook, Q queen and K king. Pawns have no leading piece letter. A capture is marked with ×. For example, Bf1×g2 describes a bishop moving from f1 to g2 and capturing there.
Live chess, tournaments and variants: know the difference
“Online chess” can describe several different experiences. A game running in your browser may use a local computer opponent, while a live multiplayer service connects people over the internet.
- Play chess live: this usually means a real-time game with another person, often with a clock. Chessroom currently provides browser computer games and shared-device play, rather than live online matchmaking.
- Play chess tournament online: tournaments may involve pairings, rounds, standings and time controls. These need a tournament service or organiser; they are not part of Chessroom’s current game modes.
- Play chess variants online: variants change the starting position or rules. Chessroom currently uses standard chess, including castling, en passant and promotion when legal.
If your aim is simply to play chess online with friends sitting next to you, a shared board is enough. If your friend is elsewhere, look for a service that explicitly supports remote multiplayer. Choosing the right format avoids confusion before the first move.
Common questions
Can I play chess online free without registering?
Yes. Chessroom’s game does not require a game account. Open the board, select a mode and start. Saved progress belongs to the browser you use.
Can I play chess against the computer as black?
Yes. Select Black under Your pieces before starting. White moves first, so the computer will make the opening move.
Can I play chess online with friends on separate devices?
Not in Chessroom’s current 2 Players mode. That mode is for two people sharing one device, not a remote game or an invitation link.
Does the game have a clock?
There is no game clock in the current version. You can pause to think rather than playing against a countdown.
How do I continue a saved game?
Return in the same browser on the same device. When an unfinished game is available, the home menu offers Resume. Private browsing, blocked storage or clearing site data can prevent a game from being retained.
A useful next game has a simple purpose: protect your pieces, practise one opening idea, or spot a threat before it arrives. Choose the mode that fits that purpose and take time to understand the moves.
